Sleep deprivation

Immediate thoughts of female subject number 1.

Had a good 24 hours without sleep, which didn't hit me until the following morning. Felt really tired and very feint and ill during the following hours until I could get home. Not easy all of the time to stay awake - had bouts of tiredness throughout the night and now feel so tired; if I close my eyes standing up I feel I could sleep. Felt very sick and not really with it the following morning and know my tests could in no way be as good as before I had no sleep. Now I want to go to sleep.

After sleeping from 2pm Wednesday until 7.30am on Thursday, I feel much better and refreshed. I still feel a bit strange but it feels like years ago that I felt as bad as I did Wednesday morning. Enjoyed whole experience and would certainly do it again if I had the chance. 24 hours was however quite enough, no way could I have lasted much longer. Glad that I do not feel like I apparently did the following morning after this experiment, when I even had to walk out of one of my lessons, I felt that tired! - I don't remember anything at all that happened in those lessons that day though.

Immediate thoughts of female subject number 2

Completely tired - happy though! In a scarerily (sic) good mood, feeling dead. NEVER AGAIN.

Considered View of female subject number 2

Still in a good mood. Not tired. Still wouldn't do it again though. It was kinda fun.

Immediate thoughts of male subject number 3

Feeling very low and slightly confused. I am not as enthusiastic as usual.

I was very tired which made me feel depressed. Not as able to cope with college and work. It was very difficult to stay awake during the morning lessons and I was very shaky

Immediate thoughts of female subject number 4

I was tired early afternoon. When doing the tests I was mentally okay, but physically tired. I found that I could not write properly. I thought the whole experiment was absolutely brilliant. If I was asked to participate in it again I would!

When I woke up in the morning my bones and muscles were killing me. I could not do anything, e.g. make the bed, close the car door, brush my hair etc. I was tired, at one point I did say that I wish I had never done it. I think that most of the pain was because I played basketball for four hours and my arms hurt most. However, I would still do it again (and easy on the basketball I think!!!)

Detailed feedback from female subject number 5.

Usual sleep patterns

I usually get about 7-8 hours sleep a night. I have to get up at about seven o'clock every morning which tends to leave me feeling quite tired and my attention probably isn't at it's optimum in the first couple of lessons of the day.

Sunday night

Despite going to bed early this night I found it really hard to get to sleep and only had about 6 hours sleep.

Monday (day)

I felt quite tired this day but had actually woken up by the time of the tests.

Monday night / Tuesday morning

I didn't even feel as though I was about to fall asleep though I did have to lie down after running around the gym for about 4 hours.

Tuesday Morning Lessons

Before I started my lessons I thought I'd be all right, but when I started talking to people I found that my words were coming out in the wrong order. I found it extremely hard to concentrate and found myself drifting off and almost falling asleep all the time.

Tuesday Tests

Overall I think I did better in these ones I was able to concentrate on things when I really put my mind to it.

Tests I feel I did better in and reasons why this may have been

Wiggly wire

I did much better on this test, partly because I was more nervous the first time, but mostly because I improved my technique through practice. Also, I knew how I was being assessed the second time (i.e. through how long was spent in contact with the wire rather than number of touches) so just went through as quickly as possible.

Anagrams and Maths

I found the second set easier and improved a little with practice.

Repeating numbers back

In the morning there was much more background noise so I performed worse because I couldn't clearly hear the numbers.

Limericks

The second one (about heaven and the bell) was a lot harder to remember anyway.

Reaction time and Darts

I didn't feel that this was affected much.

Immediate thoughts of female subject number 6

Really really tired "Why did I do this?, I don't get enough sleep anyway let alone agree to staying awake for at least 24 hours!" The worse part for me was between 5am and 7am, and then 9am till 11am. During the day sleep came in waves e.g. 1 minute I was wide awake and the next I just wanted to go to sleep.

After female subject number 6 has slept for 17 hours

"I'm glad I went home early I don't think that I could have stayed awake any longer". It tested my will power to stay awake it would have been really easy to go to sleep during the day.

I definitely did worse in the tests after I had stayed awake. the one I had difficulty with was the one where you had to say back a number of digits.

Immediate thoughts

Good fun but knackering

Considered view of subject number 7

It seemed well organised, well thought through and very worthwhile. I got to know people lots better! It's interesting to think that staying awake at an all night party would be easy, but when you have to say awake all night it's incredibly hard, especially at 5 in the morning!!

Immediate thoughts of male subject number 8

I didn't realise how tired I would be!! Did well to make it home. Need sleep. Can't walk straight. Was it a bad idea to go without sleep?

Considered view of male subject number 8

It was pretty fun, now I've had sleep to recover. Got to meet new people. Shouldn't have played basketball all night. Too much food - felt sick!! Would like to know results of study. Would like to do it again.

Immediate thoughts of female subject number 9

This was good fun and not as tiring as I thought it would be. Team morale and encouragement was great and everyone was good company. I am finding I have trouble talking as words get jumped (sic) up, also the words run around the page when I tried to read. I kept waiting for the 'hard bit' to come but it never did and staying awake isn't really a problem.

Considered view of female subject number 9

After 20 hours of sleep from 6.30pm to 2.30pm my eyes are focusing much better! I still think it was great fun but I feel as though I have lost a whole day. I do feel a bit like a guinea pig being observed but I guess thats what we are really. I would definately do this again and I have some reall great photos.

Immediate thoughts of male subject number 10.

It's a laugh, free food.

Considered view of male subject number 10

12am to 4am goes a bit slower than I thought.
